Sussex Series: The Chattri

A 15cm x 15cm original reverse oil painting on 4 mm glass featuring The Chattri war memorial which stands in the South Downs above the Brighton and Hove community of Patcham. The memorial stands on the site where a number of Indian soldiers were cremated during World War I (see Brighton Dome for more on this story). The soldiers would have been patients sent to the Brighton Pavilion which had been converted into a hospital for injured servicemen during the war. The memorial is accessible to walkers and bridleway users in the South Downs National Park.
The painting is signed 'mjh,' dated '14' for 2014 for when the painting was started and is presented floating on 4 stainless steel stand-offs within a white box frame. Framed size is 30cm (h) x 29cm (w).
