What "Just a Card" Means to Me
'If everyone who'd complimented my beautiful gallery had bought JUST A CARD we'd still be open' For over a year now I've had work on display and for sale at Artologie in the West Sussex village of Cuckfield. In this time I have become friends with the owner, celebrated sales of my work that came out of the clear blue (I wasn't involved till it was over), and learned second-hand something about running an independent high street shop in an online era. Add those experiences to the hours of time and pockets of money I have spent organising, running, and participating in my own...
UPDATE Crowdfunding Fabrica: Jehane, Instagram and Me
I made it! Following my last blog post on Crowdfunding Fabrica: Jehane, Instagram and Me I finally made a visit to Fabrica gallery! Even making it in time to see the David Shrigley Life Model II exhibition, installation and studio space. Along the back wall you can see a small portion of the hundreds of figure drawings that visitors to Life Model II made during this year's Brighton Festival, turning this exhibition of a sculpture into an interactive installation and working art studio. 100 of the drawings from this part of the model's journey, will now be selected to travel with her to other...
Crowdfunding Fabrica: Jehane, Instagram, and Me
Earlier this spring I was browsing my social media feed when I came a cross a Crowdfunding campaign to support Fabrica, Brighton's Centre for Contemporary Art. Over the last five years Fabrica's name has popped up on a regular basis as other artists recommended them to me for events, exhibitions, and artist opportunities in the Brighton area. So as soon as I saw the Crowdfunding page I knew I wanted to be involved ... even though I have yet to actually make it through the door yet. (Sometimes honesty can be so embarrassing. On the plus side, this is something I plan to change...
The Passion Behind My Latest Project
Reading around the subject for my upcoming exhibition project Working title: "Asking the Moon" Easter has come and gone, bluebells are in bloom and I've planted out the strawberries. So despite the occasional chill wind off the North Sea here in England, I am hopeful that warmer temperatures are on their way. In the meantime, I am busy laying the groundwork for a major naïve art exhibition to feature work by approximately 40 contemporary naïve artists (20 from the UK and 20 from Croatia) across a range of media and intended to tour across the UK and Croatia, possibly...
On my European Heart
First published in my July 2016 newsletter 17 years ago this past May I stood on the Italian shores of the Adriatic after dark - it was the off season and the beach was quiet. I stood on the promenade with a railing to lean on - the great dark sea ahead of me, the night sky above me and it felt as though I stood at the end of the world. There was no horizon line and it was impossible to tell where the lights from the fishing boats ended and the sparkling stars above began. Without that railing to hold...
