Made by Melanie

I am a reverse oils on glass painter, working with textiles since 2020 when lockdowns and the escalating climate crisis sparked a desire to work in a more sustainable way and with materials that met my need for touch-sensory feedback. My work fits within self-taught, naive, outsider, and folk art traditions. Today I balance my creative practice with caring for someone with autism and managing my own Meniere’s diagnosis.

What I Make

TEXTILE ART & SENSORY-RICH QUILTS

I work with donated textile remnants, including upholstery and soft furnishing fabrics that would otherwise go into landfill, and UK sourced quilting cottons. In my studio I mix and match using a combination of machine and hand sewing techniques: creating through play, responding to serendipity, and seeking combinations that bring me joy. The end results are objects meant to be held, touched, and used – often practical, always decorative, sometimes weird.

GLASS PAINTINGS, FINE ART PRINTS & GREETING CARDS

I started painting on glass in Zagreb in 2010 where I was mentored by the Croatian Naive artists Ivica Fišter, Katarina Krvarić, and Željko Seleš. From interpreting local landmarks to imagining entirely new dreamscapes I paint the world as I sense it might be – full of animal spirits, hidden symmetries, and unexpected meanings. Glass paintings are then photographed for a range of gloss and matte archive-quality prints and any-occasion greeting cards.
